About Dr. Ch. Uma Maheshwara Rao
Dr. Ch. Uma Maheshwara Rao — known in the KIMS team as ‘Dr. Chikkam’ — is an Honorary and Consultant urologist and renal transplant surgeon at KIMS Institute of Renal Sciences & Advanced Urology, Secunderabad, with over 2,000 independent kidney transplant operations to his credit and involvement in 5,000+ transplant procedures across his career. He trained at PGIMER, Chandigarh — completing both his MS in General Surgery (1997) and his specialist training in the Kidney Transplant Division at the same institution that trained Dr. S. Sahariah — before building a transplant career in Hyderabad's private hospital system.
His career path followed directly from Dr. Sahariah's transplant programme. After completing his specialist training, he joined as Registrar in the Department of Urology at Mahavir Hospital, Hyderabad — the charitable transplant hospital where Dr. Sahariah had built one of Hyderabad's highest-volume transplant programmes — and progressed to Consultant in the Urology and Renal Transplant Unit at the same institution, before joining KIMS.
Across his practice, Dr. Uma Maheshwara Rao has established kidney transplant programmes at eight centres, trained successive generations of transplant surgeons, and contributed to the KIMS transplant research group's substantial published body of work on immunosuppression protocols (ATG vs basiliximab induction, everolimus-based regimens, calcineurin inhibitor minimisation, tacrolimus monitoring), transplant outcomes (new onset diabetes after transplantation, graft function, NK-cell repertoire in chronic allograft dysfunction), and post-transplant monitoring (spot protein:creatinine ratio). This research, published in the Saudi Journal of Kidney Disease and Transplantation, Transplant Immunology, Transplantation, the Indian Journal of Transplantation, and Immunological Research, constitutes one of the most productive transplant research programmes at a private hospital in Telangana.
His honorary designation at KIMS reflects his senior status within the transplant team — a recognition of long service and the depth of his contribution to the KIMS transplant programme. He continues in active clinical practice, available Mon–Sat 09:30–17:00.
