KIMS Institute of Renal Sciences
& Advanced Urology, Secunderabad
If you or someone you love has been told their kidneys are not working properly, finding the right team of doctors matters more than anything else. KIMS Institute of Renal Sciences & Advanced Urology in Secunderabad brings together kidney disease specialists (nephrologists), urological surgeons, transplant physicians, and cancer care experts — all on one campus, working as one team.
We manage everything from the earliest signs of kidney disease to the most complex cases: kidney transplants across blood group barriers (ABO-incompatible), robotic surgery for prostate and kidney cancer, laser-based kidney stone removal without any cuts, and round-the-clock dialysis including intensive care dialysis (CRRT) for critically ill patients.
Recognised as the Best Hospital of the Year in Nephrology by Times Healthcare Achievers, and part of the KIMS Hospitals network — one of India's largest healthcare groups with its 1,000-bed flagship hospital in Secunderabad — we have treated over 50,000 patients across 15+ years of specialist kidney and urology care.
Centers of Excellence atKIMS Renal Sciences
Nephrology
Nephrology is the specialty dedicated entirely to the kidneys. Our nephrologists manage every stage of kidney disease — from the earliest detectable protein in your urine right through to end-stage kidney failure requiring dialysis. We treat chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), diabetic nephropathy, glomerulonephritis, lupus affecting the kidneys, polycystic kidney disease, and complex hypertension linked to kidney damage. When standard tests are not enough, we perform kidney biopsy for precise diagnosis. You might come here for: high creatinine levels, protein or blood in urine, swollen legs, CKD diagnosis, AKI, or an abnormal kidney function test.
Read MoreUrology
Urology covers conditions of the urinary tract in both men and women, and the male reproductive system. Our urologists manage kidney stones, enlarged prostate (BPH), recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder disorders, urological cancers, andrology (male fertility and sexual health), and complex reconstructive cases. Most procedures use minimally invasive or robotic techniques — meaning smaller cuts, less pain, and faster recovery. You might come here for: kidney stone pain, difficulty urinating, weak urine stream, blood in urine, recurrent UTIs, or a prostate or bladder problem.
Read MoreKidney Transplant
KIMS is one of South India's most active kidney transplant centres, consistently rated among the nation's best. We are registered with NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) and the Telangana State Transplant Authority (TSTA). We perform live donor, deceased (cadaveric) donor, ABO-incompatible (blood group mismatched), and paediatric kidney transplants. A complete multidisciplinary team — transplant surgeon, nephrologist, coordinator, and social worker — manages every case from evaluation through surgery to lifelong follow-up. You might come here for: a transplant evaluation, a second opinion on transplant eligibility, post-transplant follow-up, or a failed graft requiring re-transplant planning.
Read MoreDialysis Care
The KIMS Dialysis Centre provides 24/7 haemodialysis, bedside dialysis for patients who cannot be moved, and CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) for critically ill ICU patients. Our units use certified reverse osmosis water treatment, maintain segregated hepatitis B bays, and follow strict infection control protocols. We also run a peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) training programme so that eligible patients can perform dialysis safely at home. Vascular access services — AV fistula creation, graft placement, tunnelled catheter insertion — are available on-site. You might come here for: starting dialysis, emergency dialysis, switching dialysis types, home dialysis training, or vascular access creation.
Read MoreUro-Oncology
Uro-oncology manages cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate, testis, and penis. Every case at KIMS is reviewed by a multidisciplinary tumour board before treatment begins. Surgery — typically robotic-assisted — is combined with medical oncology and radiology input to plan the most effective approach. We perform radical prostatectomy, radical and partial nephrectomy, radical cystectomy with neobladder reconstruction, and orchidectomy, all using minimally invasive techniques wherever possible. You might come here for: a new urological cancer diagnosis, a second surgical opinion, robotic prostatectomy, or surveillance after cancer treatment.
Read MoreMinimal Invasive Surgery
KIMS operates Da Vinci Xi & X robotic surgical systems for complex urological procedures. Robotic surgery means the surgeon works with a 10x magnified 3D view and instruments that move with sub-millimetre precision — far beyond what is possible in open surgery. We perform robotic prostatectomy, nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, and bladder reconstruction. Advanced 3D laparoscopic surgery, flexible endoscopic procedures, and laser-based stone surgery (RIRS, Mini-PCNL) are also available. For patients, this means smaller scars, less blood loss, less pain, and faster return home. You might come here for: robotic prostatectomy, nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, RIRS, Mini-PCNL, or TURP.
Read MoreLaser Stone Centre
KIMS runs a dedicated high-volume Laser Stone Centre for kidney, ureter, and bladder stones. We use RIRS (Retrograde Intra-Renal Surgery) — a flexible telescope passed through the natural urinary passage to fragment stones up to 2 cm with no incision at all. For larger or more complex stones, Mini-PCNL uses only a 5mm pinhole in the back. Most patients are discharged the same day or after one night. Our metabolic stone clinic identifies the underlying reason for stone formation and prescribes dietary and medical therapy to prevent recurrence. You might come here for: a kidney stone causing pain or blocking urine flow, a stone that failed shock wave treatment, or recurrent kidney stones.
Read MorePaediatric Renal & Urology
Children's kidney and urological conditions are different from adults' and need age-specific expertise. The KIMS Paediatric Renal and Urology team manages recurrent UTIs, vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), hydronephrosis, nephrotic syndrome in children, congenital urinary abnormalities, hypospadias, undescended testes, and paediatric kidney transplants. All consultations and treatments take place in dedicated child-friendly environments with paediatric-trained nursing staff. You might come here for: a child with recurrent UTIs, bedwetting, hydronephrosis, a kidney abnormality found on scan, or VUR.
Read MoreAndrology & Male Health
Andrology is the specialty focused on male reproductive health and sexual function. The KIMS Andrology Centre manages male infertility, erectile dysfunction, low testosterone (hypogonadism), varicocele, and other male sexual health conditions. All consultations are conducted in complete confidence. Diagnosis involves hormonal blood tests, semen analysis, and imaging where required. Both medical and surgical treatments are available. You might come here for: male infertility evaluation, erectile dysfunction, low testosterone, or varicocele.

Kidney Diseases (Nephrology)
Our nephrology team manages the full spectrum of kidney health, from early detection to advanced care for chronic conditions.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
CKD means your kidneys are slowly losing their ability to filter waste from the blood — most often due to long-term diabetes or high blood pressure. KIMS manages patients at every stage — from early-stage monitoring and lifestyle management, all the way through dialysis preparation and transplant planning. The goal is always to slow the disease down and keep you off dialysis for as long as possible.
Read MoreAcute Kidney Injury (AKI)
AKI is a sudden, rapid drop in kidney function — usually triggered by a severe infection (sepsis), a major drop in blood pressure, a toxic medication, or a contrast dye used during a scan. Unlike CKD, AKI can often be fully reversed if treated promptly. KIMS provides emergency nephrology care for AKI, including CRRT (continuous dialysis) for the most severe cases in the intensive care unit.
Read MoreDiabetic Nephropathy
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in India. Over years of poorly controlled blood sugar, the tiny blood vessels inside the kidneys become damaged — causing protein to leak into the urine and kidney function to fall progressively. KIMS nephrologists work directly with endocrinologists (diabetes specialists) to aggressively control blood sugar, blood pressure, and protein leakage.
Read MoreHypertension and Kidney Disease
High blood pressure both damages the kidneys and is worsened by kidney disease — a reinforcing cycle that accelerates kidney failure if left untreated. KIMS manages complex and resistant hypertension, identifying whether the kidneys are the driving cause and treating both conditions together.
Read MoreGlomerulonephritis
Inflammation of the tiny filters (glomeruli) inside the kidney, usually due to an immune system reaction. Symptoms include blood or protein in the urine. KIMS uses kidney biopsy to diagnose the exact type — IgA nephropathy, membranous nephropathy, lupus nephritis, or ANCA vasculitis — and prescribes targeted immunosuppressive treatment.
Read MoreNephrotic Syndrome
The kidneys leak large amounts of protein into the urine, causing significant swelling (legs and eyes), low blood protein, and raised cholesterol. KIMS identifies the cause (Minimal Change Disease, FSGS, etc.) often through biopsy to define the correct treatment path.
Read MorePolycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
An inherited condition where fluid-filled cysts grow in the kidneys, gradually replacing healthy tissue. KIMS provides genetic counselling, monitoring via ultrasound/MRI, and uses newer targeted medicines to slow progression.
Read MoreHow We Treat You —From Medicines to Major Surgery
Kidney and urology care covers a wide range of treatments. Your KIMS doctor will recommend the right combination based on your specific condition, its severity, and your personal circumstances. Not every patient needs surgery. Most kidney disease is managed medically — with the right medicines, diet, and monitoring — and surgery is used only when it provides a clear benefit.
01
Medical Therapy & Monitoring
Many kidney and urological conditions are managed primarily with medications — not surgery. Blood pressure tablets, immunosuppressants for kidney inflammation, medicines to slow CKD progression, bladder treatments, and hormonal therapies for prostate conditions all need precise prescribing and regular monitoring. Our nephrologists and urologists adjust your medications based on blood tests, kidney function trends, and imaging — not on a one-size-fits-all protocol. For most patients, good medical control is what keeps them off dialysis and surgery for longer.
02
Dialysis
When the kidneys can no longer clean the blood adequately, dialysis takes over. Haemodialysis is performed at our 24/7 dialysis centre — your blood is passed through a cleaning machine and returned to your body. Sessions typically last 3 to 5 hours, three times a week. Peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) uses the lining of your abdomen as a filter and can be done at home after training at KIMS — offering greater independence. For critically ill ICU patients, CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) provides slow, gentle 24-hour dialysis without stressing an unstable circulation.
03
Minimally Invasive Procedures
Most urological procedures at KIMS no longer require large incisions or long hospital stays. Kidney stones are removed using a laser through a flexible telescope passed via the natural urinary passage (RIRS — no cut) or through a 5mm pinhole (Mini-PCNL). Prostate enlargement is treated using laser energy through the urethra (no cut). Bladder tumours are removed endoscopically. These techniques mean less blood loss, fewer complications, less post-operative pain, and patients typically returning home within 1 to 2 days.
04
Robotic Surgery
For more complex kidney, prostate, and bladder operations, KIMS uses Da Vinci robotic surgical systems. The surgeon controls robotic instruments from a console — working with a 10x magnified 3D view and precision that exceeds what the human hand alone can achieve. The result for patients: smaller cuts (5 tiny ports instead of one large incision), significantly less blood loss, lower complication rates, and a faster recovery compared to open surgery. Robotic surgery does not mean the robot operates independently — a KIMS surgeon makes every single decision and movement.
05
Kidney Transplant Surgery
Kidney transplant is the definitive treatment for end-stage kidney failure, offering a better quality of life and longer survival than long-term dialysis. KIMS performs transplants from living and deceased donors, including ABO-incompatible cases where blood groups do not match. The operation takes 3 to 4 hours under general anaesthesia. Most patients are discharged within 7 to 14 days and begin structured outpatient follow-up immediately. With modern immunosuppression and careful monitoring, a live donor transplant can function for 15 to 25 years or longer.

Book An AppointmentCommon Questions About Kidney & Urology Care at KIMS
Expert answers to help you understand your kidney health and treatment options.
A nephrologist is a physician who specialises in the medical management of kidney diseases — conditions like CKD, AKI, glomerulonephritis, and dialysis. A urologist is a surgeon who treats conditions of the urinary tract and male reproductive system — including kidney stones, prostate enlargement, bladder disorders, and urological cancers. Many kidney patients need both. At KIMS Secunderabad, nephrologists and urologists work in the same institute and collaborate directly on complex cases — so you get the right doctor for your condition without being bounced between hospitals.
See a nephrologist if your blood test shows a raised creatinine or reduced eGFR; if there is protein or blood in your urine; if you have diabetes or high blood pressure and have never had your kidney function checked; if you have unexplained swelling in your legs or face; or if a family member has kidney disease. Early consultation — before symptoms appear — is the single most effective way to slow chronic kidney disease.
It depends on the cause and how quickly treatment begins. Acute kidney injury (AKI) — sudden kidney failure from infection, low blood pressure, or a toxic drug — often recovers fully with prompt treatment. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) — long-term damage from diabetes or hypertension — cannot be reversed, but its progression can be significantly slowed with specialist management. This is why early diagnosis and a nephrologist's care make such a profound difference.
Yes. KIMS Secunderabad is one of South India's most experienced kidney transplant centres, consistently rated among the nation's best. We perform live donor, deceased (cadaveric) donor, and ABO-incompatible (blood group mismatched) transplants, including paediatric kidney transplants. We are registered with NOTTO and the Telangana State Transplant Authority. With modern immunosuppression, a live donor kidney can function for 15 to 25 years or longer.
Most kidney stone procedures at KIMS are day-care or overnight. RIRS (for stones up to 2 cm) takes 45 to 90 minutes — most patients go home the same day or the next morning. Mini-PCNL (for larger stones) takes 1 to 2 hours with a 1 to 2 night stay. You will have a small ureteric stent for 2 to 4 weeks, removed in a quick outpatient appointment. Most patients return to desk work within 2 to 3 days.
Most dialysis patients find sessions comfortable once settled in. The initial needle insertion for vascular access causes brief discomfort — the dialysis itself is painless. You can read, watch TV, or rest during the session. Some patients experience mild leg cramps or a slight drop in blood pressure toward the end — both are manageable with adjustments to the session. Most patients adapt well within the first few weeks. Our dialysis nurses are with you throughout every session.
Some forms are. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is the most common genetic kidney condition — if a parent has it, each child has a 50% chance of inheriting it. Alport syndrome also has a hereditary component. Diabetic and hypertensive kidney disease are not directly inherited, but the underlying conditions — diabetes and high blood pressure — often run in families, creating an indirect hereditary risk. KIMS offers genetic counselling for families with known hereditary kidney conditions.
