Kidney Transplant Centre at KIMS — 1,500+ Transplants, South India

A kidney transplant offers patients with end-stage renal failure the best chance of a longer, fuller life significantly better outcomes than long-term dialysis. The KIMS Kidney Transplant Centre at Secunderabad is one of South India's most active and experienced transplant programmes, having performed over 1,500 kidney transplants including live donor, deceased (cadaveric) donor, ABO-incompatible (blood group mismatched), and paediatric kidney transplants.

We are registered with NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) and the Telangana State Transplant Authority (TSTA), and participate in the national organ sharing programme for cadaveric kidneys. Our transplant operations take place in dedicated Class-100 Laminar Flow Operation Theatres filtered to fewer than 100 airborne particles per cubic foot — specifically designed for immunosuppressed transplant recipients who need the lowest possible infection risk during and after surgery.

KIMS is one of fewer than 20 centres in South India capable of performing ABO-incompatible kidney transplants transplants across blood group barriers. Using desensitisation protocols involving plasmapheresis, we make transplantation possible for patients who would otherwise have no eligible living donor. Our post-transplant follow-up programme is structured, lifelong, and managed by the same nephrology team that performed the transplant evaluation.

What makes KIMS Transplant different

1,500+ kidney transplants among South India's highest volumes

High caseload means our transplant surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and transplant coordinators have managed complications that other teams encounter rarely. Experience translates directly to better outcomes.

ABO-incompatible transplants a rare capability

Most transplant centres require compatible blood groups. KIMS performs ABO-incompatible transplants using desensitisation opening up transplant options for patients previously told they have no eligible donor.

Class-100 Laminar Flow OTs dedicated to transplant

Our dedicated transplant theatres filter air to fewer than 100 particles per cubic foot minimising surgical site infection risk for immunosuppressed recipients. Combined with advanced hemodiafiltration (HDF) machines for complex pre-transplant cases.

Structured lifelong follow-up

Transplant success depends as much on post-operative management as surgery. KIMS provides protocol biopsies, immunosuppression monitoring, infection screening, and cardiovascular risk management our transplant coordinators are reachable between clinic visits.

Frequently asked questions

With modern immunosuppression and careful follow-up, a live donor kidney transplant can function for 15 to 25 years or longer. Deceased donor kidneys typically last 10 to 15 years. Long-term graft function depends significantly on adherence to immunosuppressive medicines, blood pressure control, and regular monitoring all areas where KIMS provides active, structured support.

Yes, at KIMS. We are one of fewer than 20 centres in South India performing ABO-incompatible transplants. Through a process called desensitisation which involves plasmapheresis to remove incompatible blood group antibodies we make transplantation possible between donors and recipients with different blood groups. This opens up transplant options for patients whose family members are willing but have a different blood group.

The cost of kidney transplantation varies based on donor type (live vs cadaveric), complexity (standard vs ABO-incompatible), and post-operative duration. KIMS provides transparent cost estimates during the pre-transplant evaluation. We are empanelled under Aarogyasri (PMJAY) and CGHS — eligible patients may receive subsidised or covered transplantation. Contact us at 040 - 44885000 or assistance@kimshospitals.com for a personalised estimate.

Yes, KIMS has an active international patient programme for kidney transplantation providing pre-arrival teleconsultation, medical visa support, accommodation guidance, airport coordination, and structured post-discharge tele-follow-up. Patients travel to KIMS from across South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. Contact our international team at assistance@kimshospitals.com.
