Laser Stone Centre
Kidney stones are one of the most painful conditions a person can experience and one of the most common reasons people visit KIMS. The KIMS Laser Stone Centre at Secunderabad is a dedicated, high-volume centre for the minimally invasive treatment of stones in the kidney, ureter, and bladder. We perform a large number of stone procedures annually, with most patients discharged the same day or after a single overnight stay.
The centre uses two primary techniques: RIRS (Retrograde Intra-Renal Surgery) for stones up to 2 cm, in which a flexible telescope is passed through the natural urinary passage to reach the kidney — no incision is made at all and a laser fragments the stone; and Mini-PCNL (Miniaturised Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) for larger or more complex stones, using only a 5mm pinhole in the back. Both procedures are performed under anaesthesia and achieve high stone clearance rates. Our Holmium and Thulium laser systems are 100W+ the gold standard for safe, effective stone fragmentation even in patients on blood thinners.
Stone removal alone is not the complete solution. Our metabolic stone clinic investigates why you formed a stone measuring 24-hour urine stone risk factors and blood metabolic markers and prescribes targeted dietary modifications and medical therapy to prevent stones coming back. Many patients who come to us have already had one stone treated elsewhere and suffered a recurrence. Our metabolic programme is designed to break that cycle.
RIRS (Retrograde Intra-Renal Surgery)
No incision — flexible telescope through natural passage, laser fragments stone. Best for stones up to 2 cm. Same-day discharge for most.
Know More →Mini-PCNL
5mm pinhole in back for large or complex stones. Less blood loss than conventional PCNL. 1–2 night stay.
Know More →Metabolic Stone Clinic
24-hour urine profiling to identify underlying cause of stones — dietary plan and medical therapy to prevent recurrence.
Know More →100W+ Holmium and Thulium lasers
Our laser unit uses high-power Holmium and Thulium laser technology effective on even the hardest calcium oxalate or cystine stones. Thulium laser can fragment stones at lower energy settings than Holmium, making it safer for patients on blood thinners and those with complex stone locations.
No incision for most stones
RIRS — the primary technique at KIMS for stones up to 2 cm requires no skin incision at all. The procedure is performed through the natural urinary passage. Patients on blood thinners who cannot safely undergo conventional surgery can often be treated with RIRS.
Most patients home the same day
RIRS is typically a day-care or overnight procedure. Mini-PCNL involves 1–2 nights. Most patients return to desk work within 2–3 days. The era of week-long hospital stays for kidney stone treatment is over at KIMS.
Metabolic clinic stops recurrence
Treating the stone is not enough. Our metabolic stone clinic identifies why you formed a stone and prescribes dietary and medical treatment to prevent new ones. Patients who follow our metabolic protocol have a significantly lower recurrence rate.
In most cases at KIMS — yes. RIRS uses a flexible telescope passed through the natural urinary passage (no skin cut) to reach the kidney and laser-fragment the stone. There is no incision. For larger stones, Mini-PCNL uses only a 5mm pinhole in the back. The rare patient who needs open surgery is the exception, not the rule.
RIRS typically takes 45 to 90 minutes. Most patients are discharged the same day or after one overnight stay. You will have a small ureteric stent (a soft tube) in place for 2–4 weeks removed in a quick outpatient procedure. Most patients return to desk work within 2 to 3 days.
Stone recurrence depends on your metabolic profile — the minerals and factors in your urine that led to stone formation. KIMS metabolic stone clinic performs a 24-hour urine stone risk assessment and blood tests to identify the cause. Based on results, we prescribe specific dietary changes and, where needed, medication. Patients who follow our metabolic programme have a significantly lower chance of new stone formation.
Yes, this is one of RIRS major advantages. Because no incision is made, RIRS is generally safe for patients who cannot safely stop blood-thinning medication (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel). Our team will review your specific medication list and advise whether any adjustments are needed before the procedure.
