About Dr. Samit Chaturvedi

Dr. Samit Chaturvedi is one of India's most experienced robotic urologists, with specific expertise in robotic renal transplantation — having performed over 500 robotic kidney transplant procedures, including complex multi-vessel cases, paediatric kidney transplants, and cases requiring novel surgical approaches to reduce warm ischaemia time. He currently serves as Director of Robotic Urology, Uro-Oncology and Renal Transplant at KIMS Institute of Urological Sciences, Hyderabad.

Trained at some of India's leading postgraduate institutions — MBBS from NSCB Medical College Jabalpur, MS General Surgery from Gandhi Medical College Bhopal, and MCh Urology from the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) Lucknow — Dr. Chaturvedi built his specialist practice over 18 years at tertiary-care hospitals including Holy Family Hospital New Delhi, SGPGI Lucknow, BLK Super Specialty Hospital New Delhi, Batra Hospital New Delhi, Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute New Delhi, and Max Super Speciality Hospital Saket, before joining KIMS Hyderabad.

His clinical focus encompasses the full spectrum of advanced urological surgery: robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, robotic partial and radical nephrectomy, robotic radical cystectomy with urinary diversion, robotic pyeloplasty, robotic renal transplant (both transperitoneal and extraperitoneal approaches), laparoscopic urology, laser treatment of BPH and kidney stones, urethral reconstruction, and the management of complex urological cancers. He is a recognised proctor for robotic urology and robotic renal transplant from Intuitive Surgical, and was invited to initiate and proctor robotic renal transplantation at the University of Basel, Switzerland.

At KIMS, Dr. Chaturvedi leads the Robotic Urology and Uro-Oncology programme, managing the multidisciplinary treatment of prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, and upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) — integrating robotic surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology in a tumour board model. His renal transplant programme includes living donor, deceased donor, ABO-incompatible, and robotic renal transplant cases, with a particular focus on minimising ischaemia time and improving long-term graft outcomes.

Areas of clinical expertise

Robotic Urology

Dr. Chaturvedi performs the full range of robotic urological procedures using the da Vinci robotic surgical system. Robotic surgery offers surgeons enhanced three-dimensional visualisation, precision instrument control, and a magnified operative field — translating into less blood loss, smaller incisions, faster recovery, and better functional outcomes compared with open surgery for most urological conditions.

  • Robotic Radical Prostatectomy (RARP) — for prostate cancer, with nerve-sparing technique for preservation of continence and potency
  • Robotic Partial Nephrectomy — kidney-sparing surgery for small kidney tumours, preserving maximum functioning kidney tissue
  • Robotic Radical Nephrectomy — for larger kidney tumours not amenable to partial resection
  • Robotic Radical Cystectomy (RARC) with urinary diversion — for muscle-invasive bladder cancer
  • Robotic Pyeloplasty — for UPJ obstruction, the most common structural cause of hydronephrosis
  • Robotic Renal Transplant — 500+ procedures, including extraperitoneal RAKT, paediatric RAKT, triple-vessel RAKT
  • Robotic Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection (RPLND) — for testicular cancer staging and treatment
  • Robotic Adrenalectomy — for adrenal tumours including phaeochromocytoma, Conn's syndrome, Cushing's syndrome, and adrenal metastases

Uro-Oncology

Dr. Chaturvedi manages the full spectrum of urological malignancies — prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, upper tract urothelial carcinoma, testicular cancer, penile cancer, and adrenal tumours. Every cancer case at KIMS is reviewed at the multidisciplinary tumour board, integrating the expertise of the urologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and radiologist to ensure each patient receives a treatment plan based on evidence, not institutional preference.

  • Prostate cancer — active surveillance, RARP, TULSA-PRO, radiation therapy, androgen deprivation therapy, coordination with PSMA PET staging
  • Kidney cancer — robotic partial or radical nephrectomy, ablation for small tumours, targeted therapy and immunotherapy for metastatic RCC
  • Bladder cancer — TURBT (transurethral resection) for diagnosis and non-muscle-invasive disease, RARC with ileal conduit or neobladder for muscle-invasive disease
  • Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) — robotic nephroureterectomy, endoscopic management for selected cases
  • Testicular cancer — orchiectomy, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, coordination with medical oncology for BEP chemotherapy

Renal Transplant

Dr. Chaturvedi's renal transplant programme is among the most advanced in India, with over 500 robotic renal transplant procedures — including complex multi-vessel cases, paediatric transplants, ABO-incompatible transplants, and cases requiring novel approaches to minimise warm ischaemia time. He has published peer-reviewed research on establishing a robotic renal transplant programme, extraperitoneal vs transperitoneal RAKT, paediatric RAKT outcomes, and triple-vessel RAKT technique.

  • Living donor renal transplant — laparoscopic or robotic donor nephrectomy + robotic or open recipient surgery
  • Deceased donor renal transplant — full programme including ECD (extended criteria donor) and DCD (donation after cardiac death)
  • ABO-incompatible renal transplant — desensitisation protocol, plasmapheresis, immunosuppression management
  • Robotic renal transplant (RAKT) — transperitoneal and extraperitoneal approaches, paediatric RAKT, multi-vessel RAKT
  • Re-transplantation — complex cases requiring removal of a failed graft and implantation of a second or third kidney
  • Transplant complications management — vascular, urological, and immunological complications

Laser Urology & Stone Disease

Dr. Chaturvedi performs laser urological procedures using holmium and Thulium Fibre Laser (TFL) for the treatment of kidney and ureteric stones (RIRS — retrograde intrarenal surgery, Mini-PCNL), and for prostate enlargement (HoLEP — Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate). Laser techniques offer superior precision, minimal bleeding, and faster recovery compared with conventional electrosurgical approaches for most stone and prostate procedures.

Reconstructive Urology

Reconstructive urology addresses the structural consequences of disease, trauma, prior surgery, or congenital abnormality on the urinary tract. Dr. Chaturvedi's reconstructive expertise includes urethral reconstruction for urethral stricture disease (anastomotic urethroplasty, buccal mucosa urethroplasty), pyeloplasty for UPJ obstruction, ureteric reconstruction, fistula repair (vesicovaginal, ureterovaginal), and complex urinary diversion following cystectomy.

Laparoscopic Urology & Endourology

For procedures not suitable for robotic assistance — or where laparoscopic access provides advantages — Dr. Chaturvedi performs laparoscopic nephrectomy, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, laparoscopic pyeloplasty, laparoscopic adrenalectomy, and complex endoscopic procedures including TURBT, TURP, URS (ureteroscopy), and PCNL. His endourological experience includes flexible ureteroscopy with laser for complex intrarenal stone disease.
