About Dr. V. S. Reddy

Dr. V. S. Reddy is HOD - Nephrology & Transplant Physician at KIMS Institute of Renal Sciences & Advanced Urology, Secunderabad, with over 20 consecutive years at KIMS since May 2005 — making him the most tenured nephrologist in the KIMS Renal Sciences team. With 30+ years of overall medical practice, he brings a depth of clinical experience in nephrology that spans the full range of adult kidney disease — chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, glomerular diseases, transplant nephrology, and critical care nephrology.

Dr. Reddy completed his entire superspecialty training at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad — both his MD in Internal Medicine (1998) and DM in Nephrology (2003). NIMS is one of India's central government premier medical institutions and the primary nephrology training and referral centre for the Telangana region. Training under a single high-volume nephrology programme from MD through DM provided him with continuous, longitudinal exposure to the full clinical spectrum of kidney disease at one of the region's most complex nephrology services.

His academic distinction during training was marked by two recognition awards: the Smt Lakshmi Kothandaraman Memorial Gold Medal for Best Published Research Work at NIMS in 2002 — recognising scholarly contribution during his DM training — and the Best Resident Award at NIMS in 2001. These reflect engagement with nephrology research and clinical excellence that formed the foundation of his subsequent practice.

After briefly practising at Bolleneni Hospitals, Nellore (May 2003 to April 2005), Dr. Reddy joined KIMS Secunderabad in May 2005 — where he has built a long-standing practice across the full spectrum of nephrology. His 20+ years at KIMS has placed him at the centre of the KIMS Renal Sciences team through multiple generations of clinical and technological development, including the evolution of the centre's dialysis, transplant, and critical care nephrology programmes.

Areas of clinical expertise

CKD Management

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) management across all five stages — from early detection and risk factor modification through pre-dialysis preparation and renal replacement therapy planning. Management of CKD's systemic complications — anaemia of CKD (EPO and iron supplementation), renal bone disease (secondary hyperparathyroidism), cardiovascular risk in CKD, and dietary and fluid management. CKD clinic with structured monitoring and progression risk stratification.

Haemodialysis & Peritoneal Dialysis

Acute and maintenance haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis (CAPD and CCPD), and renal replacement therapy initiation and prescription. Assessment and preparation of patients for long-term dialysis — including AV fistula evaluation, access planning, and patient education for home peritoneal dialysis.

Kidney Transplant Nephrology

Pre-transplant recipient evaluation and clearance for kidney transplant — including ABO-incompatible transplant candidates — post-transplant care and immunosuppression management, surveillance for rejection (clinical and biopsy-based), and management of post-transplant complications — hypertension, CKD in the transplanted kidney, infections, and malignancy. Long-term follow-up of transplant recipients.

Glomerular Diseases

Evaluation and management of glomerulonephritis and the nephrotic and nephritic syndromes — including IgA nephropathy (Berger's disease), membranous nephropathy, minimal change disease, FSGS, lupus nephritis, ANCA-associated vasculitis, and Henoch-Schönlein purpura. Kidney biopsy correlation and immunosuppressive management.

Hypertensive & Diabetic Nephropathy

The two most common causes of end-stage kidney disease in India. Management of hypertensive nephropathy — blood pressure targets specific to kidney disease, renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockade, and slowing CKD progression. Diabetic nephropathy management — glycaemic optimisation, proteinuria reduction, and coordination with the KIMS endocrinology team.

Critical Care Nephrology

Acute kidney injury (AKI) management in ICU and medical ward settings — identification of AKI aetiology, fluid management, avoidance of nephrotoxic agents, and renal replacement therapy (continuous RRT) for oliguric or anuric AKI in critically ill patients. Coordination with the KIMS critical care team.
